Cognitive decline affects a substantial percentage of the European population, with an estimated 10% of individuals aged 60 and above experiencing mild cognitive impairment, and approximately 5% progressing to dementia each year (Eurostat, 2020).
However, a concerning number of cases remain underdiagnosed due to various systemic barriers. The shortage of geriatric specialists and neurologists, evident in only 7.5 specialists per 100,000 people in some regions (European Brain Council, 2019), hinders comprehensive assessments. Moreover, logistical challenges such as the need for in-person visits and time constraints contribute to delayed diagnoses.
Research by Alzheimer Europe (2021) suggests that up to 50% of individuals with dementia go unrecognized until advanced stages, significantly limiting intervention options. This alarming percentage underscores the urgency to address these issues through increased medical resources, telehealth innovations, and public awareness campaigns, ensuring timely identification and management of cognitive decline to mitigate the prevalence of dementia.
